BCS Member Group Hosting service documentation

Contents

What is MGH?

It's a free hosting service offered to Branches and Specialist Groups of the BCS.
You can build dynamic pages using Perl, PHP and MySQL; or use existing software which exploits those functions (if the release levels are compatible).
FrontPage extensions and ASP are also said to be supported although I have not tested them.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Host directory structure and FTP

To post your site to your BCS virtual server, you have to use FTP.
In our case, I do “ftp www.oxon.bcs.org” and login with my adminuserid.
On connecting, I am in the /users/adminuserid directory.

To get to the directory which represents my website I need to do the following:

I can then upload my files in the normal way.
Log files are stored for you in the /logs directory:

Individual daily logs are built up in the 2004 subdirectory – whose permissions don't allow reading – but the accumulated daily logs are in the web.log and ftp.log files which are zipped on a monthly basis.

Shared Tools

I'm sure that webmasters of branches and SGs must have some requirements in common. I've started a Access denied!/Shared Tools page in the hope that others will contribute ideas, recommendations and even code.
